Wellness is not a women’s only club
- November 28, 2023
When we think of wellness, we usually think of women. Unfortunately, the wellness industry has very much been geared towards a female audience. There has been some wellness for men, but it’s usually been around fitness. Since the last few years, there’s been a much bigger uptake for men seeking coaching, especially for their mental and sexual health.
Wellness is for everyone, and there’s no reason why men cannot explore all areas of their health and wellbeing. We explore some of the coaching techniques used to support sexual and mental health for men. Of course, these are not exclusive to men, they are available for all genders.
Cognitive Behavioral Techniques (CBT): CBT helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviours that may be contributing to sexual or mental health issues. It can be effective in addressing anxiety, depression, and performance-related concerns.
Mindfulness and Meditation Practices: These techniques can help individuals become more aware of their thoughts, sensations, and emotions, leading to greater self-awareness and better management of stress and anxiety.
Sensate Focus Exercises: These are a series of structured intimacy-building exercises designed to help enhance emotional and physical connection. They can be particularly helpful for individuals struggling with intimacy issues.
Communication Skills Training: Effective communication is crucial for healthy relationships and sexual satisfaction. Coaching can help men develop better communication skills to express their needs, desires, and concerns.
Somatic and Body-Centred Practices: These techniques focus on bodily sensations and can be useful for addressing issues related to body image, performance anxiety, and trauma.
Breathwork and Relaxation Techniques: Deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques can help individuals manage stress, anxiety, and performance-related concerns.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): EFT is a therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying and addressing emotional needs in relationships, which can have a positive impact on sexual intimacy.
Trauma-Informed Approaches: For individuals who have experienced trauma, a trauma-informed approach helps create a safe and supportive environment for healing and growth.
Somatic Experiencing (SE): SE is a body-centred approach to healing trauma and stress-related disorders. It helps individuals release stored tension in their body and resolve trauma-related symptoms.
Goal Setting and Action Planning: Coaches can help men set realistic goals for improving their sexual and mental well-being, and create actionable steps to achieve them.
Values Clarification: Understanding one’s core values can provide guidance in making more centred and informed decisions related to health and wellbeing.
Positive Psychology and Strengths-Based Approaches: Focusing on strengths and positive attributes can help individuals build resilience and enhance their overall well-being.
Psychoeducation on Sexual Health Issues: Providing information and resources on common sexual health concerns and conditions can be empowering for individuals seeking support.
As you can see, there are numerous techniques to target all sorts of wellness topics. We all deserve healthy and happy lives. Wellness isn’t gender-exclusive, it should be available to everyone.
