Beam Dream: a nice cocoa with a sub-clinical sleep dose

A cocoa-based sleep powder with 3mg melatonin, low-dose L-theanine and magnesium, sold on celebrity testimonials and a EUR 60/month subscription default. The ritual is the active. The powder is the wrapper.

Beam Dream is hot cocoa with a sleep stack mixed in. 3mg melatonin (a sleep dose), 142mg L-theanine and 200mg magnesium (sub-clinical), 0.3g reishi (homeopathic), and a generous cocoa-and-coconut-cream base to make it taste like dessert.

It works. Mostly because hot cocoa with melatonin in it would also work — and a warm drink ninety minutes before bed is a behavioural intervention dressed up as a supplement.

What the dose actually delivers

The melatonin is the only ingredient at a study-relevant dose. 3mg is on the higher end of what sleep researchers actually recommend (most evidence supports 0.3-1mg for sleep onset; higher doses are associated with grogginess the next day).

The melatonin is real. Everything else is at a dose the body cannot reliably notice.

The L-theanine at 142mg is below the 200-400mg dose where the calming effects show up in trials. The magnesium at 200mg is fine but in oxide form for cost reasons — poorly absorbed compared to glycinate. The reishi is a tradition-led ingredient at a sprinkle.

What is actually doing the work

The ritual. A warm, sweet drink ninety minutes before bed is a powerful sleep cue regardless of the actives. Your body learns the association inside a week, and the placebo effect on subjective sleep quality compounds with the small real effect of the melatonin.

This is not a bad thing. The behavioural framing is the active. The ingredients are the wrapper that makes the behaviour stick.

The price problem

A 30-serving tub runs €45-€60 once shipping is paid. That is €1.50-€2/cup. Cocoa powder + a magnesium glycinate capsule + a 0.5mg melatonin tablet would deliver a better dose, identical ritual, and cost €0.20/cup.

What we would actually take

For sleep: 0.5mg melatonin sublingual + 200mg magnesium glycinate + a warm drink of your choice. €0.30 a night, better-dosed actives, same ritual.

For the cocoa experience: a cup of unsweetened cocoa with a square of dark chocolate stirred in. Equally calming, equally caloric.

Codex Scorecard
Skip it
62/100
Composite score
Potency
Mixed. 3mg melatonin is a sleep dose; 142mg L-theanine and 200mg magnesium are at the low end of what trials use.
Bioavailability
Solid. Powder mixes well, fat-soluble actives ride along on the cocoa base.
Marketing vs hype vs reality
Weak. 'Best sleep of your life' is a category overclaim for a product that mostly works because it is a calming ritual.
Sustainability
Weak. Plastic tub, US-only logistics, premium per-serving cost.
Ethics
Mixed. Transparent label. Subscription default and influencer marketing skew the average customer's expectations.
Verdict
A nice cocoa with a sub-clinical sleep dose.
